Next year, 222 talented researchers will help lift Danish research to new heights with support from Independent Research Fund Denmark.

Independent Research Fund Denmark provides funds for ground-breaking and original research ideas across all scientific research areas. Now 222 researchers can start new and important research based on their own best ideas. It is research that will examine everything from sex education in elementary school, where and when in history the dog was domesticated, to the ethical use of artificial intelligence. The money has been granted under the two funding instruments DFF-Research Project1 and DFF-Research Project2.

"It is a day of celebration for Independent Research Fund Denmark and for Danish research when we distribute funds for free research to all the exceptionally talented researchers with so many promising, ground-breaking and concrete research ideas. So even though, or perhaps precisely because, the projects range widely in both themes, approaches and fields, it is all in different ways research that works to improve our lives and way of life", says Maja Horst, chairman of the board of Independent Research Fund Denmark.

Research from different parts of the ecosystem

The fund distributes the two different instruments, DFF-Research Project1 and DFF-Research Project2, which in different ways provide the opportunity for the individual researcher to realize his or her good research idea: A DFF-Research Project1 must promote the quality of Danish research and is characterized by a clear and defined problem formulation, where the research activities are expected to be of high international quality. A DFF-Research Project2 is often characterized by being a coordinated and binding collaboration on a well-defined, common problem formulation, but it can also be a project formulated by a single researcher for implementation in his or her research group.

Reservations are made for changes in the numbers in connection with the fund's forthcoming budget review.

Facts about DFF-Research Project1 and DFF-Research Project2

A total of DKK 757 million has been distributed for 222 research projects under DFF-Research Project1 and DFF-Research Project2. This gives an overall success rate measured in terms of both amount and number of 14 percent.

DFF-Research Project1 typically runs over three years, and must be carried out within a financial framework of up to DKK 2 million, excl. overhead.

175 DFF Research Project1 grants have been awarded in 2023 with a success rate of 11 percent, both if you look at the amount applied for and granted and the number of applications and grants.

DFF-Research Project2 typically lasts up to 4½ years and is carried out by several researchers (including postdoctoral candidates and PhD students) with a financial framework of DKK 2 million to DKK 4,3 million, excl. overhead.

47 DFF-Research Project2 grants have been awarded in 2023, with a success rate of 16 percent if you look at the amount applied for and 15 percent if you look at the number of grants compared to the number of applications
