Agreements on the research reserve for 2023 have been reached

Based on the agreements of the distribution of the research reserve (“forskningsreserven”), which were concluded on 28 February 2023, Independent Research Fund Denmark shall grant a total of DKK 564.3 million in 2023 for research within various themes and programmes. In addition, there is an unknown amount for free research.

In 2023, Independent Research Fund Denmark will grant funds for research within the following themes and programmes. Please note that the English translation can change until the calls for the different themes and programmes are published (confer the original Danish wording in parenthesis):

  • 102,5 million DKK for the theme "Independent green research" (Fri grøn forskning)
  • 200 million DKK for the theme "Strengthened clinical and independent research" (Styrket klinisk og uafhængig Forskning)
  • 100 million DKK for the theme "Better framework for psychiatry" (Bedre rammer for psykiatrien)
  • 35 million DKK for the theme "Strengthened research on vulnerable children and the young " (Styrkelse af forskning i udsatte børn og unge)
  • 25 million DKK for the theme "Learning and well-being in elementary school" (Læring og trivsel i folkeskolen)
  • 20 million DKK for the theme "Stronger research environments for vocational education" (Stærkere forskningsmiljøer for erhvervsuddannelserne)
  • 81,8 million DKK for the "Research talent program Inge Lehmann" (Forskertalentprogrammet Inge Lehmann)

In addition, Independent Research Fund Denmark will receive an as yet unknown amount for free, curiosity-driven research. The amount will be known when the Finance Act for 2023 is finally passed. The foundation expects to publish the ordinary call for proposals in June 2023.

Time schedule

Independent Research Fund Denmark expects to publish the calls for the different themes and programmes in April 2023. The application deadlines are expected to be in June 2023.

Funding instruments

The detailed conditions, including the offered funding instruments and the requirements for the applicant, will appear in the respective calls.

Starting date for projects

Independent Research Fund Denmark does not grant support with retroactive effect. The earliest starting date for the projects awarded in 2023 is 1 February 2024, and the latest start time is 1 December 2024.
