Independent Research Fund Denmark is supporting green, curiosity-driven research through the initiative ‘Independent green research’. A total of 132 million DKK has been granted to 42 groundbreaking research projects, all aiming to provide knowledge on how to address the climate and environmental challenges facing the world.
The fund received numerous applications with excellent green research proposals, showcasing a wealth of ideas. The thematic ad hoc committee, DFF | Thematic research – Independent green research, evaluated and processed the many applications. Among the 42 projects, research topics include securing global food security, recycling batteries from electric vehicles, and cultivating quinoa in Denmark.
Jan Oskar Jeppesen, chair of the committee DFF | Thematic research – Independent green research, states:
»It has been incredibly fascinating to read about the many different approaches and ideas from the researchers on how to tackle these major societal challenges. One of the strengths of the committee’s work is that we approach the issues in different ways, leading to truly interesting and dynamic discussions. «
He adds:
»We have also emphasized enabling research within and across all major academic fields, as there are many paths to achieving a green transition. This has resulted in some highly inspiring and promising projects being granted funding. «
»It is clear that the researchers have both the will and the ability to address the climate and environmental challenges our society faces. With projects spanning power-to-X, CO2 storage, and groundwater protection, the initiatives broadly tackle the many climate and environmental challenges before us, « says Søren Serritzlew, chair of the board for Independent Research Fund Denmark.
Independent Research Fund Denmark received a total of 333 applications and awarded 132 million DKK to 42 projects, resulting in a success rate of 13% based on the number of applications.
The program ‘Independent green research’ is part of the thematic allocations which is a political, strategic initiative within a particular theme open to contributions from all scientific fields that can provide knowledge on the topic. Thematic research serves as a supplement to independent research based on researchers’ own curiosity-driven initiatives.
Since 2018, Independent Research Fund Denmark has awarded research grants within politically determined themes funded by annual political agreements on the distribution of research reserves.
Reservations are made for changes in grant amounts and number of grants during the upcoming administrative budget review.
