61 promising research projects to strengthen patient-centered research

Independent Research Fund Denmark has awarded 192 million DKK to 61 new research projects. Each of these projects will contribute with new knowledge and strengthen patient-centered clinical and independent research.

The selected research projects aim to provide new insights across a wide range of areas, including various care and treatment methods, and target different citizen and patient groups within both local and municipal healthcare services.

Among the projects, there is a focus on research into women's diseases, inequalitity in health between men and women, chronic disease, disease in a lifelong perspective, reducing inequality in health based on disability and socioeconomic conditions, as well as the impact of environmental xenobiotics on fertility and the relationship between environment and low birth rates.

The 61 research projects were chosen based on a thorough evaluation by the thematic committee, DFF | Thematic Research – Strengthened clinical and independent research.

»All applications undergo a very rigorous evaluation process, involving both national and international experts. This is now the third year we are awarding grants under the call 'Strengthened clinical and independent research', and the quality is clearly increasing. There are many interesting projects spanning in both geography and subject, which will benefit Danish patients in the long term, « says Henrik Toft Sørensen, Chair of DFF | Thematic Research – Strengthened clinical and independent research.

The funding also supports independent, researcher-initiated trials in areas where there is usually limited commercial interest and opportunities for external funding.

Facts about the call 'Strengthened clinical and independent research'

Independent Research Fund Denmark received a total of 247 applications and has awarded funding to 61 projects. The success rate is 24.7%, based on the number of applications.

Clinical research is briefly described as the practical aspect of health research, focusing on describing patients' disease profiles and disease progressions, evaluating diagnostic methods, and testing different treatment approaches, including independent and researcher-initiated trials, studies, etc., particularly in areas where there is limited commercial interest or potential for external funding.

The call 'Strengthened clinical and independent research' is part of the thematic allocations which is a political, strategic initiative within a particular theme open to contributions from all scientific fields that can provide knowledge on the topic. Thematic research serves as a supplement to independent research based on researchers’ own curiosity-driven initiatives.

Since 2018, Independent Research Fund Denmark has awarded research grants within politically determined themes funded by annual political agreements on the distribution of research reserves.

Reservations are made for changes in grant amounts and number of grants during the upcoming administrative budget review.
