The new 2024-2026 strategy by Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF), Independent research in a changing world, outlines three key objectives: to strengthen Danish research of world-class quality, to support independent research in a changing world, and to adapt to new paradigms in research assessment. Through this strategy, the fund seeks to bolster independent research, ensure diversity, and adapt to an evolving research funding landscape, thereby creating a robust foundation for the ongoing progress of Danish research.
Chair of the Board Søren Serritzlew states: “With its new strategy, the fund will not only promote the most groundbreaking ideas but also work to advance the development of independent research within a changing research funding landscape. We believe this will lay the foundation for the knowledge that will shape the future of Denmark and the world. In a time of rapid global change, with challenges such as climate, technology, and global security demanding new solutions, it is crucial that researchers have the opportunity to work freely and creatively.”
By promoting independent research that can generate new knowledge and insights, the fund aims to support society’s ability to tackle significant societal challenges, such as climate change, health, and digital transformation. At the same time, the fund will, through increased focus on communication and transparency, work to ensure that research contributes even more effectively to a productive and inclusive research culture.
With the new strategy, the fund will also intensify its focus on collaboration with private foundations to secure broad funding for research ideas, while actively promoting international cooperation in a new geopolitical reality. Additionally, the strategy emphasizes guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence and the promotion of Open Science, aimed at enhancing transparency and accessibility of research results across society.

The fund supports independent research, i.e., research based on researchers' own ideas across and within scientific fields.
Furthermore, the fund advises the Minister for Higher Education and Research, the government, and the Danish Parliament on research-related matters. This is done with expertise and academic diversity through the fund's 84 board and council members, all of whom are recognized and active researchers.
