NordForsk has announced 17 new research projects exploring how artificial intelligence can be used responsibly and to the greatest benefit of society across the Nordic and Baltic region. The projects address both the opportunities and risks of AI in areas such as healthcare, education, public decision-making, energy systems and working life.

Danish research environments are strongly represented. Danish researchers participate in 15 of the 17 projects, and four projects are led by Danish principal investigators. The projects are carried out through close Nordic-Baltic collaboration and are co-funded by several national research funding organisations, including the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

Projects led from Denmark

  • Culture-Sensitive Assessment and Adjustment of Large Language Models
Led by Bolette Sandford Pedersen, University of Copenhagen. The project focuses on adapting large language models to Nordic and Baltic linguistic and societal contexts.

  • Data Quality for Responsible AI in Energy Systems
Led by Irina Shklovski, University of Copenhagen. The project examines data quality and responsible AI use in energy infrastructures.

  • Generative AI in Education for Young Adults
Led by Kim Toft Hansen, Aalborg University. The project explores the use of generative AI in youth education, with particular attention to inclusion and gender equality.

  • Organizing Across Boundaries for Responsible Use of AI: Towards Interconnected Smart Grids (ORBIT)
Led by Kasper Trolle Elmholdt, Aalborg University. The project addresses responsible AI use in Nordic energy grids.

In total, the projects involve 163 researchers from 47 institutions across nine countries, contributing new knowledge to the shared Nordic-Baltic effort to develop and apply artificial intelligence responsibly.
